The Stress Habit We Don't Even Notice

Why "Powering Through" May Be the Most Harmful Habit

Women Over 40 Have Ever Learned

Have you ever found yourself saying...

"I'll eat after I finish this."

"I just need to get through today."\

"I'll rest this weekend."

"I'm fine."

For many women, these phrases have become so common that we barely notice we're saying them.

But what if these aren't simply expressions?

What if they're signs of a stress habit that has quietly become part of the way we live?

As a Holistic Living & Wellness Strategist, I've worked with countless women who come to me feeling exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, and disconnected from their bodies. Many assume something is "wrong" with them.

The truth is often much different.

Many aren't lacking motivation.

They're living with a nervous system that has forgotten what safety feels like.

When Survival Becomes a Lifestyle

Stress isn't always dramatic.

It isn't only major life events like divorce, illness, financial hardship, or caregiving.

Sometimes stress looks like:

  • Never sitting down during the day

  • Skipping meals because you're too busy

  • Working through lunch

  • Answering emails late into the evening

  • Constantly multitasking

  • Feeling guilty when you rest

  • Believing everyone else's needs come before your own

  • Saying "yes" when your body is desperately asking you to say "no"

At first, these behaviors seem harmless.

Over time, they become habits.

Eventually, they become an identity.

Many women begin describing themselves as "the strong one," "the dependable one," or "the one everyone counts on."

While these qualities can be beautiful, they can also come with a hidden cost if they are never balanced with restoration.

Your Body Was Designed for Stress—But Not Constant Stress

Stress is actually an incredible survival mechanism.

When your brain senses danger, it releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help you respond quickly.

Your heart beats faster.

Your blood sugar rises.

Energy is redirected toward survival.

This response is lifesaving when you're facing a true emergency.

The problem is that many women are activating this same system dozens of times each day—not because they're in physical danger, but because their bodies perceive constant pressure.

Deadlines.

Family responsibilities.

Financial concerns.

Health changes.

Caregiving.

Information overload.

The body doesn't always distinguish between a charging bear and an inbox that never stops growing.

When this stress response never fully turns off, your nervous system remains on high alert.

Why This Hits Women Over 40 Differently

As women move through perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes can make the body more sensitive to chronic stress.

Many women begin noticing:

  • Brain fog

  • Poor sleep

  • Increased belly fat

  • Anxiety

  • Mood changes

  • Low energy

  • More intense food cravings

  • Slower recovery from stress

  • Difficulty concentrating

It's easy to assume these symptoms are simply "part of getting older."

But in many cases, they're your body's way of asking for a different approach.

Not more discipline.

Not more hustle.

More restoration.

The Hidden Cost of Always Powering Through

When we ignore our body's signals day after day, we begin disconnecting from one of our greatest sources of wisdom.

We stop recognizing hunger until we're starving.

We stop noticing fatigue until we're completely depleted.

We ignore tension until it becomes pain.

We dismiss stress until it shows up in our sleep, our digestion, our mood, or our hormones.

Our bodies are always communicating.

The question is:

Are we listening?

Five Signs You May Be Living in Survival Mode

Take a moment and reflect.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • You feel guilty when you're not being productive.

  • You struggle to relax, even when you have time.

  • You often eat while working or standing.

  • You can't remember the last time you truly felt rested.

  • You tell yourself you'll slow down "after this week."

If you answered yes to several of these, your body may be asking for restoration—not because you've failed, but because you've been carrying too much for too long.

A Different Way Forward

Healing doesn't begin with perfection.

It begins with awareness.

One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself each day is:

"What does my body need from me today?"

Some days the answer may be movement.

Some days it may be nourishing food.

Some days it may be deeper sleep.

Some days it may simply be permission to pause.

Small acts of self-care repeated consistently can have a profound impact over time.

Begin with One Small Reset

Today, I invite you to try something simple.

Set aside five quiet minutes.

Take a slow breath in.

Exhale completely.

Place one hand over your heart.

Ask yourself:

"What have I been pushing through that deserves my attention instead?"

You don't have to solve everything today.

You simply have to begin listening.
