Debunking the Myths: Why Some Plant-Based Can Diets Fail

Anyone who knows me (even a little) finds the fact that I was once a vegan to be
laughable! I’ve always loved meat – especially on the bone – so those were the longest
8 years of my life. But I was going through some severe health issues at the time
and had been told by countless authorities, doctors (and everyone in LA) that
plant-based eating was THE way to improve your health and that gluten and animal
products were evil. However, rather than improving my health, I proceeded to get sicker,
more fatigued, had extensive muscle wasting, and had become severely anemic. My
hair, skin and nails were a mess, and I became severely diabetic! When I finally waved
the white flag and returned to eating meat, my life forever changed for the better!
Now, before you scream at me for beating up the 13.4 million plant-based Americans -
hold on! I’m NOT saying that this way of eating makes you sick or is “bad.” Veganism, if
done correctly, can be highly beneficial and effective. What I am saying is that like me
there are millions of us who get it all wrong! Being a HEALTHY vegan/vegetarian takes
special guidance, understanding of biology and nutrition, and a lot of individual
assistance to nail it - especially for weight loss!
Check out these common myths that most plant eaters believe to be true.
Myth: It’s hard to get enough protein on a plant-based diet.
Fact: As Americans, we equate “protein” with “meat.” The truth is, there are plenty of
plant-based proteins that are ample sources of amino acids (proteins) for our bodies to
thrive. The complication is that these sources of protein are also very high in
carbohydrates. If you’re also trying to be metabolically healthy and release excess
weight and inches, you may have a really hard time achieving your goals without some
professional guidance and careful tracking.
Myth: If it’s made from plants, it’s healthy and good for you.
Fact: Just because it’s made from plants doesn’t automatically mean that a food is
healthy for you. There is a plethora of low-quality (and downright poisonous) ingredients
and food products made from plants. Animals can chase you and have teeth and claws.
Plants have defenses, too – like anti-nutrients, thorns, and poisons. They can be difficult
to digest and cause a wide variety of inflammatory ills and diseases in some people.
Plants can also be the root causes of a whole host of digestive conditions such as leaky
gut, IBS and IBD, colitis, and even some cancers.
Myth: Animal fats are unhealthy and vegetable-based fats are good for you.
Fact: If well-sourced, animal fat sources like grass-fed butter, full-fat organic dairy, and
pasture-raised egg yolks are packed with dense nutrition that provides satiety,
cardiovascular health, optimized metabolic health, and better nutrient up-take than any
other fats on the planet. Conversely, vegetable oils like industrial seed oils, long touted
as the preferred dietary fat sources, are carcinogenic, inflammatory, compromise your
gut health, and are hormone disruptors.
Don't let bad (but well-intentioned) habits, choices, and lifestyle decisions compromise
your wellbeing - and possibly damage your health permanently! Most of the information
we consume about being plant-based is grounded in the marketing messaging from “big
food” conglomerates that don’t care about your health; they just want to sell you fake
meat products with highly suspect and nauseating ingredients.
Here"s the good news: You CAN be a healthy and thriving vegan or vegetarian! You
CAN optimize your plant-based lifestyle and STILL maximize nutrition, release excess
pounds and inches, and be metabolically healthy.
